Local community forest honoured for excellence in forest management

A Burns Lake community forest group has been honoured by the Province for excellence in forest management and wildfire mitigation.

@chinookcommunityforest was presented with the 2024 Robin Hood Memorial Award on June 12, 2024, in Mackenzie.

“The people who manage and operate the Chinook Community Forest provide a great example of how community-based forestry enriches rural towns and economies,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests. “By making their community safer from wildfires and their rigorous sustainable forestry practices, the Chinook Community Forest has truly showcased excellence in community forestry.”

Chinook Community Forest has taken a leading role in sustainable forest management and wildfire mitigation in the Burns Lake area. In 2023, it completed 200 hectares of wildfire risk-reduction treatments around the community, along with surveying another 1,000 hectares for wildfire risk-reduction projects. A partnership with the University of Northern British Columbia led to Chinook Community Forest’s advanced LiDAR technology being used to track old-growth trees in areas prone to wildfire or pests. Chinook Community Forest’s commitment to sustainable forest management resulted in the reforestation of one million trees in 2023.

Chinook Community Forest is a partnership of six First Nations and two municipalities:

- Lake Babine Nation
- Wet`suweten Nation
- Tsil kaz koh Nation
- Cheslatta Carrier Nation
- Nee Tahi Buhn Indian Band
- Skin Tyee Nation
- The Village of Burns Lake
- The Regional District Bulkley Nechako

The B.C. NDP government has made some significant policy changes on everything from indigenous reconciliation and forestry to climate change.

But it should pump the brakes on land use changes that create uncertainty for business and investors, former B.C. NDP premier Glen Clark said Monday at the Business Council of BC’s annual Business Summit.

“Stop making changes,” Clark said. “Let business catch up. We need a period – a lengthy period -- of stability.”

“In recent years, the provincial government has made literally dozens of changes to the rules governing forestry and land use,” he said. “While each change, in and of itself, may be justified and each change may indeed be modest, the cumulative impact on industry operating on the land has been devastating."

As we navigate the challenges of our industry, let`s remember the power of kindness. This Mental Health Week, we`re embracing the theme of `A Call to Be Kind` and rallying for compassion in our workplaces. Here are some tips to support mental wellness:

- Check in with your colleagues regularly. A simple `How are you?` can go a long way.
- Practice active listening. Give your full attention when someone shares their struggles.
- Offer support without judgment. Sometimes, just being there can make a world of difference.
- Take breaks and prioritize self-care. Your well-being matters too!
- Reach out for help when needed. There`s strength in asking for support.

Together, let`s cultivate a culture of kindness and understanding in the forestry community. Let`s support one another. #MentalHealthWeek

"Since 2018, provincial allowable annual cuts (AAC) have been mostly declining as the province grapples with the significant loss of timber in the BC Interior caused by the mountain pine beetle (MPB) infestation, wildfires and other natural phenomenon, along with significant changes in public perspectives on the value of the forests that the industry relies upon. This raises the question of whether replaceable contract holders should expect compensation for loss of work from the government as a result?"

"As an understatement, this past year has seen a barrage of new legislation and policies battering the prosperity of BC’s forest sector. Combined with non-stellar markets, these factors have manifested towards making it even more difficult for people and communities directly or indirectly intertwined with the forest industry and dependent on its success.

While those challenges were communicated through the various panels at our recent convention, opportunities for the forest sector were presented to bolster BC’s prosperity and provide solutions to many of society’s most urgent problems.

What are those solutions? Here are a few...."
